What is GamStop? The UK's National Self-Exclusion Register

Every conversation about non-GamStop casinos starts with a shared understanding of what GamStop actually is, what it does, and where its remit stops. It is a narrower tool than many people assume, and understanding the shape of it changes the shape of every downstream question.

The basic mechanics

GAMSTOP is the trading name of the National Online Self-Exclusion Scheme Ltd, a not-for-profit incorporated in 2018 and funded by an industry levy. It runs a single central register of British consumers who have chosen to exclude themselves from all online gambling licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. When you register you provide your name, date of birth, postcode, and email address. When you subsequently attempt to open an account, or log in to an existing account, at any UKGC-licensed operator, that operator is contractually required to query the GAMSTOP register in real time and refuse the interaction if you appear on it.

The requirement on operators is not voluntary. It sits in the Gambling Commission's Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice at LCCP 3.5.5, which came into force for all online licensees on 31 March 2020. Failure to check GAMSTOP, or serving a customer known to be on the register, is treated by the Commission as a licensing breach with substantial regulatory consequences. In the years since 2020 the Commission has fined multiple operators for GAMSTOP failures, in some cases in the millions of pounds.

What GamStop actually blocks

GAMSTOP blocks account creation and log-in at online gambling operators licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. Every word in that sentence carries weight. It does not block:

How to register

Registration takes place at gamstop.co.uk. It is free. The process asks for your legal name, date of birth, postcode, and email address, plus contact preferences. You choose an exclusion length — six months, one year, or five years. You should choose the longest length you can genuinely accept, because the exclusion cannot be reversed once you commit.

Within twenty-four hours the exclusion is live across the register. Existing accounts at UKGC operators will be closed and any positive balance returned. Attempts to open new accounts at UKGC operators will fail at the registration step. If a UKGC operator accepts your registration despite an active GAMSTOP exclusion, that is a licensing breach and you should report it to the Gambling Commission directly.

The single most common problem with new registrations is name and address variants. If you have moved recently, or use different name spellings across different accounts, the register may not link every existing account to your new exclusion. It is worth logging into any existing UK gambling accounts once, updating name and address details to match your GAMSTOP registration exactly, and then submitting the exclusion.

Extending or removing an exclusion

Extensions are easy: log back in and add more time. Removal is deliberately slower. Once your chosen exclusion period expires, your account is not automatically reinstated. You must actively log in to GAMSTOP, complete a seven-day cooling-off period, and then confirm you wish to be removed from the register. During the cooling-off week, no UK operator will accept you. After it, you are back in the market. If you do nothing, the exclusion simply lapses passively and you re-enter without cooling-off, which is why the active reversal process was introduced — to add a moment of deliberate choice at the point where relapse risk is highest.

Where GAMSTOP stops working

GAMSTOP is a technical measure implemented by UKGC licensees. Its jurisdiction is co-extensive with UK online gambling licensing. It has no reach at all beyond that boundary. This has three practical consequences that matter.

First, an offshore operator has no legal or technical requirement to check GAMSTOP and none of them do. Registration at a non-GamStop site takes minutes even for someone with an active five-year UK exclusion.

Second, this is not an oversight in GAMSTOP's design; it is a boundary of its design. GAMSTOP is a scheme run by UK operators for UK operators. Extending it to non-UK operators would require an international agreement, or a payment-blocking regime, or a mandatory-blocking regime at ISP level — all of which have been discussed and none of which yet exist.

Third, the answer to "GAMSTOP does not cover offshore" is not to abandon GAMSTOP. It is to add other layers on top of GAMSTOP. Our exclusion tools guide covers the stack: bank blocks, device-level blockers such as Gamban and the free BetBlocker, payment provider restrictions, and trusted-contact safeguards. GAMSTOP handles the UKGC-licensed market cleanly; the other layers handle what GAMSTOP cannot.

The evidence base and common confusions

Well over half a million individuals currently hold an active GAMSTOP registration, with the majority choosing five-year exclusion. Independent research consistently finds self-exclusion is one of the most effective single interventions available for problem gambling harm, with two caveats: effectiveness declines meaningfully if the person can access an unregulated alternative, and it works best combined with support rather than deployed alone. Both findings shape what we recommend on the responsible gambling page. People frequently confuse GAMSTOP with three other things: individual operator self-exclusion (per-operator, expires without register-wide effect); SENSE (the multi-operator scheme for physical UK casinos); and GamCare (a helpline and clinical service, not a blocking register). All three exist for different reasons at different times.

Frequently asked questions

You choose the length at sign-up: six months, one year, or five years. The five-year option is the recommended default. All three options are irreversible for their full duration — you cannot log in and cancel.

No. GAMSTOP prevents you from registering or logging in at UKGC-licensed operators. It does not filter marketing emails, social ads, TV advertising, or sponsored search results. You will need a separate blocker such as Gamban for that.

GAMSTOP covers online gambling licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. That includes The National Lottery online, most online bingo and betting sites. It does not cover in-person betting shops, in-person casinos, or non-UK-licensed sites.
